In the beginning . . . I wrote

I began writing the “Pursued by Evil, Called by God” series in 1998 on a trip to Kenya. My wife, Eva, and I were traveling to Nairobi to visit our son and daughter in law who were teaching at an international school. I had a sketch book along to do some sketches and to journal our trip. There were a lot of blank pages to fill, and I started the book series by writing it in pencil on some of those pages.

When I returned home, I kept on writing until all the pages of the book were filled. I bought another sketch book and kept on writing in pencil until it was filled. I bought another book. I used three books to complete the first draft of the story—all handwritten.

I followed a first-person journal approach to writing the novel that is written from the perspective of George Mercy. That approach made sense because I was journaling our trip to Kenya when I began the story, and I also had an M.A. in Journalism.

I typed the entire handwritten version into the computer whenever I had time. I would type a few pages, or even only a few lines, until finally the whole book was entered.

The story of George and Jane Mercy really began as one book, but the drafts kept getting longer and longer over the years until they became three books. BOOK PURSUED is the first of the three book series, “Pursued by Evil, Called by God.”
